Sandcastle Days on South Padre Island was founded more than 30 years ago by master sand sculptors Walter McDonald and Lucinda Wierenga to showcase the beach's sand and promote coastal conservation. The family friendly festival has grown into a qualifying event for the World Championships of Sand Sculpting, drawing more than 30,000 fans to watch professional sand sculptors at work.
