In the 1670s, French explorers came to the area that was to later become La Porte County, from the north along the shores of Lake Michigan. This area had long been part of the Pottawatomie Nation which covered the distance from the Wabash River on the south to Lake Michigan on the north. The French explorers and fur traders that passed this way as well as the many settlers that came after they made use of a wide Indian trail that passed through the forest to the next prairie. This opening from forest to prairie was a legendary kind of passageway or door for these early pioneers and the French called this place "La Porte" which is French for "the Door." The Mishawaka Market is a vibrant outdoor marketplace where local vendors come together to offer fresh produce, artisanal goods, and a variety of handcrafted items.
This market is run by a volunteer powered nonprofit at the Trafalgar Community Building on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, June through October, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. It gives area farmers and artisans a place to sell locally grown and produced food, plants, art and handcrafted items, and also hosts nonprofit groups for education and fundraising. There is no separate online application; vendors and sponsors are asked to contact market manager Jen Stauffer directly.

Destination Huntingburg runs this Saturday market from 7 to 11 am under the pavilion at Market Street Park. The 50th Annual Nappanee Apple Festival runs September 17 to 20, 2026, in Nappanee, Indiana, drawing more than 80,000 visitors a year.
